Kate Slaven, Specialist Mesothelioma Nurse appointed in Cambridge

Kate Slaven Meso Nurse Cambridge

Kate Slaven will support asbestos-related cancer patients at Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust

With support from Mesothelioma UK, the Charitable Trust for asbestos-related cancer treatment, Papworth Hospital NHS Foundation Trust has appointed Kate Slaven as a Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS).

Kate's appointment is the 11th addition to Mesothelioma UK's dedicated team of CNSs and is a recommencement of the role. Papworth Hospital was the second site to secure Mesothelioma UK funding for a CNS outside of Leicester. Kate will be based at Papworth Hospital in Cambridge and will focus on mesothelioma, in addition to working in the hospital's Thoracic Oncology Service. Papworth Hospital is a highly reputable tertiary referral centre and is known for being at the forefront of clinical trials and research for mesothelioma.

In this two-day-per-week role, she will have a regional responsibility for supporting, signposting, diagnostics, treatment, problem solving, leading and generally offering clinical support with everything relevant to mesothelioma. Kate will also focus on promoting the activities of Papworth Mesothelioma Support Group and raising awareness of clinical trials.

Kate has been a nurse for over 25 years and went to work straight into oncology in Norfolk, Edinburgh, Suffolk and Cambridge. Kate has a background in oncology and palliative care, which allowed her to acquire key skills to deliver effective care and symptom management. Kate has also worked as a Palliative Care Specialist Nurse in Cambridge at the Arthur Rank Hospice, where she led a team of specialist palliative care nurses.

Commenting on her new role, Kate Slaven said: "I'm delighted to take up this new role, funded by Mesothelioma UK. I am particularly interested in lung cancer patients and learning about mesothelioma to provide the highest standard of care for patients. I am committed to providing mesothelioma patients and families in and around Cambridge with the support and care that is needed, as well as making sure they are aware of the treatment options available."

Liz Darlison, Mesothelioma UK Director of Services and Consultant Nurse, added: "I would like to welcome Kate Slaven to Mesothelioma UK, a passionate and dedicated team that are having a remarkable impact across the UK. We are delighted that increased support through fantastic fundraising efforts has enabled Mesothelioma UK to extend its team of dedicated nurses. Kate will be an asset to the team, having gained a wealth of experience in her previous roles and for having the dedication in providing the utmost care for mesothelioma patients."
