Lorraine Creech, our nurse specialist and team leader, recently worked with Irwin Mitchell Solicitors to organise a Pathology and Inquests into Asbestos-related Deaths conference.
The conference was held at the Etihad Stadium, home of Manchester City Football Club on September 30, 2016 and was co-sponsored by Lilly Oncology and Merck Sharp & Dohme Ltd.
The agenda included talks from professionals and experts on establishing diagnoses in suspected asbestos-related deaths, the role of regional Mesothelioma multi-disciplinary teams, the use of evidence from post-mortems in compensation claims and the role of the coroner.
Speakers included Dr John Moore-Gillon, Emeritus Consultant Physician, Dr Jayne Holme, Consultant Pleural/Respiratory Physician, Simon Kilvington QC, Barrister and Andrew Bridgman, Coroner.
The event was attended by medical and legal professionals who specialise in asbestos-related illnesses and by families who have been affected by such illnesses.
The conference was very well received and the feedback from the attendees was positive. Some comments included:
“I found it extremely useful to understand the claims process.”
“Great knowledge gained on post mortems and inquests required for legal purposes.”
“Always humbling to hear the perspective of family members – communication is the key!”
“This conference has increased my knowledge about asbestos exposure.”
“This event will have a great impact on my role in research.”
“Today’s course will help me improve patient care and management.”
Lorraine said: “I’m really pleased with how the conference went. The speakers were informative and engaging and the attendees found it a really useful day. It was good to hear about how different professions work together and to give an insight into the work of the medical and legal experts who deal with asbestos-related illnesses.”
