PRESS RELEASE - 4 May 2017, Specialist Mesothelioma Nurse appointed in Wales

Sarah Morgan will support asbestos-related cancer patients through a post hosted by Hywel Dda University Health Board.

Sarah Morgan has been appointed as a Mesothelioma Clinical Nurse Specialist (CNS) for Wales. The new post has been made possible through funding from Mesothelioma UK, a national charity dedicated to this asbestos-related cancer. Sarah’s post will be the 13th addition to Mesothelioma UK’s Specialist Nurse team and will be based at the Hywel Dda University Health Board,West Wales. 

In this two day per week post, Sarah will work with colleagues across Wales to ensure that there is access to specialist support and information, and to promote a growing appreciation of the mesothelioma public health disaster currently being faced in the UK. 

Sarah will also promote awareness about the options available for mesothelioma patients by supporting, signposting and disseminating information, leading and generally offering appropriate clinical support.  

Sarah has been a nurse for over 30 years, having undertaken her initial nurse education at Glangwili General Hospital, Carmarthen and Swansea University. She has worked as a Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialist in Palliative Care for Pembrokeshire and as Specialist Palliative Care Clinical Nurse Specialist for Papworth hospital Cambridge. 

In her most recent post as a Macmillan Lung Cancer Specialist Nurse in Hywel Dda University Health Board, Sarah set up the lung cancer specialist nurse service in the Health Board and won an award for improving patient experience. 

Sarah has been very active in the All Wales Lung Cancer forum (AWLCF), setting up regular educational meetings and organising the annual AWLCF conference. 

As a member of National Lung Cancer Forum for Nurses Sarah has contributed to documents and guidelines, and presented at local, national and international conferences. She is a member of local and national strategic forums for development in lung cancer within the Welsh cancer network. Sarah is also a founder member of the charity Lung Cancer Campaign with aims to promote early diagnosis and improve services. 

Commenting on her new role, Sarah said: “The opportunity to work as a Mesothelioma CNS in Wales is a great privilege. As the only Mesothelioma UK nurse in Wales, I am committed to raising the profile of mesothelioma and will seek to influence the development of specialist services across Wales. I am looking forward to this new role and hope to contribute to the valuable work already being done by Mesothelioma UK.”
